The publication is a compilation of 13 articles on various facets of managing arts festivals and was produced in partnership with the European Festivals Association (EFA) and LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore. It is a follow-up to the Atelier for Young Festival Managers held in May 2011 in Singapore. The featured articles are a useful reflection on the social role of local and international festivals, as well as the need for capacity building among young festival managers.
Cultural Heritage: Challenges and Opportunities is an outcome of the 17th ASEF University (AU17) that was organised in June 2011 in Malaysia. The publication features the exhibition entitled Shared Heritage: As We See It, which reflects the participants’ perspectives on shared heritage. The book also includes a set of definitions of cultural heritage by the participants. Readers can also find pantuns (Malay poems) written by the participants as part of their intangible heritage experience.
This paper focuses on the key issue of deleveraging and its impact on global growth. It also presents the potential impact on the demand shortfall of advanced economies that is generated by the remaining deleveraging that states, firms, households, and banks have to undergo. Co-authored by renowned economists from Asia and Europe, the paper examines how rising stock markets and decreasing spreads on sovereign bonds in the euro area can influence the contribution from advanced economies towards more robust global growth.
The publication reports on the 3rd ASEM Rectors’ Conference (ARC3): Universities Businesses and You: For a Sustainable Future that took place in September 2012 in the Netherlands. It contains highlights of the ARC3, policy recommendations from the rectors and contributions of the students to the ASEM Education Process. It also includes networking activities such as the Academic Speed Dating, Rectors’ and Students’ Meet and Greet, etc.
Exploring the complex relationship between information technology and human rights, this publication elaborates on the exchanges between participants at the 12th Informal Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Seminar on Human Rights, Human Rights and Information and Communication Technology. In addition to the presentations and background paper, the publication presents the recommendations developed at the Seminar, especially on the issues of freedom of expression, right to privacy, the digital divide and the right to cultural enjoyment of the internet.
This publication sums up the discussions from the Asia-Europe Foundation Accurate Scenarios Active Preparedness (ASEF-ASAP) project. It has first-hand information on the rationale behind the development as well as applications of the ASEF-ASAP scenarios. These scenarios were developed through a series of participatory workshops organised by the ASEF Public Health Network. It features active contributions of a number of participants from multiple sectors that have a stake in pandemic preparedness across Asia and Europe.
This workshop report on Bringing the Migrant Health Discourse into Policy, elaborates challenges and opportunities of migration, as well as impact of migration policy on migrants' access to healthcare. It also documents discussion points on policy options for improving social inclusion of migrants, which can be of interest for policymakers and practitioners in the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) countries.
To strengthen the food sector's pandemic preparedness and response strategies, the ASEF Public Health Network organised a Strategy Development Workshop on Pandemic Preparedness and Response for Food Supply Security. This report presents the proceedings of the workshop and proposals for action on 8 themes: local preparedness, policy for risk mitigation, education, network/collaboration, risk communication strategies, sharing resources, involving private sector in public policy decision making and cooperation between blocs and countries.
This publication on the health status of Chinese and Filipino migrants in Italy and Spain explores an array of issues: illness patterns of migrants, health seeking behaviours of migrants, migrants' perception of national health systems in the receiving countries and healthcare providers' perceptions on migrants. Research findings highlight migrants' increasing practices of seeking medical treatment from their home countries, despite their entitlement to healthcare services provided by the countries of destination. Researchers also call for improving cultural competencies of both healthcare providers and migrants, as well as reflecting migrants' input in policy development.
This publication contains the evaluation report of the 10th Asia-Europe Young Volunteer Exchange (AEYVE). The report describes the impact of the project, as well as recommendations on the use of forum theatre to encourage dialogue on water-related public health issues in South India. It ends with suggestions on how to apply the methods used during the Health on Stage to the local situations in Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) countries.

Regional policies and programmes on communicable disease prevention and control are important components of the global public health. This report draws attention to a comparative analysis of the policies, legal frameworks and organisational structures at the regional level, mainly driven by ASEAN and the EU. It also includes a description of the political context, the main actors, and an overview of the achievements, key issues and gaps. It maps out the exchanges that take place between the two regions, and provides recommendations including bi-regional collaborative research.
Conscious Consumers for Environmental Sustainability is an outcome of the 18th ASEF University (AU18) that took place in August 2012 in Estonia. The publication features creative street actions organised by the participants during the project, as part of an awareness campaign on sustainable consumption. The book includes coverage of a photo exhibition that highlighted the participants' views on sustainability issues in relation to consumption patterns in Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) countries, as well as summaries of experts' presentations.
This report is prepared as a handbook for policy makers responsible for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related issues. It presents the methodology and illustrative SDGs based on the samples of 14 Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) countries. The study focuses on the analysis of existing national planning documents and serves as a guide for the process of setting national priorities and goals. The report also includes illustrative indicators researched in 14 countries. The more detailed study on indicators will be published in May 2014.
