The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), and its partners Arts Network Asia (ANA) and the European network Trans Europe Halles (TEH) have launched the fourth edition of Creative Encounters: Cultural Partnerships between Asia and Europe.

Through Creative Encounters, ASEF, ANA and TEH actively foster connections across cultures by supporting artistic collaborations, exchanges and dialogues.  Together, they aim to reinforce Asia-Europe exchanges with the objectives of deepening mutual understanding between cultural communities in the two regions, enhancing the mobility of artists and cultural professionals, and encouraging creative collaborations.

Creative Encounters directly responds to the Action Plan of the ASEM Culture Ministers which recognises “the important role of (…) cultural organisations in promoting cultural diversity” and specifically calls for the promotion of “exchanges in the areas of performances, exhibitions, literary works and audio-visual programmes between Asian and European countries.”

In September and October this year, “Dance Connect 2015”brings together 3 emerging choreographers Ms Hemabharathy PALANI, Mr Prasanna SAIKIA and Mr Surjit NONGMEIKAPAM SINGHand 6 dancers in a residency that begins at Attakkalari Center for Movement Arts in Bangalore, India, moves to Mercat de les Flors in Barcelona, Spain, and concludes at O Espaco do Tempo in Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal.  The residency in each country concluded with a studio presentation and performance on 18 September in Bangalore, 2 October in Barcelona and 13 October in Montemor-o-Novo. The highlight was the performance at Festival Asia on 22 September 2015 as part of the Merce Festival Barcelona - Barcelona's biggest annual city festival of the year.

These young choreographers have participated in a 3-stage collaborative production process that encouraged multi-disciplinary collaborations with light designers, dramaturges, sound and digital artists for a performance. These works were presented in Bangalore, Barcelona and Montemor where discussions, workshops, presentations were tailored involving local artists and communities, thus increasing cultural mobility and community engagement.

Dance Connect 2015” has been selected for ASEF’s support through the 4th edition of Creative Encounters: Cultural Partnerships between Asia and Europe.

  • Curating-In-Depth is an incubation project between non-governmental institutions in Asia and Europe, which focus on the development of in-depth education for curators of contemporary visual arts. The project responds to the phenomenon of “parachuting curators” who often have minimal engagement with the new cultural milieu they work in. In response, Curating-In-Depth brings together young curators from Asia and Europe for in-depth knowledge exchange through lectures, workshops, research works and study excursions in Croatia, the Philippines and Slovenia.

The first phase of the project took place in Slovenia and Croatia in May 2015. Sidd PEREZ, Curator from Planting Rice has reported on the first phase of Curating-In-Depth on culture360.

The second phase of the project will take place from 28 July–8 August 2015 in a variety of venues in Manila, including De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and the Lopez Museum and Library. Thirteen emerging curators from 5 ASEM countries, including the Philippines, will take part in the activities in Manila.

The project partners include Center for Contemporary Arts/SCCA (Slovenia), Planting Rice (the Philippines) and Kurziv (Croatia). The project has been selected for ASEF’s support through the 4th edition of Creative Encounters: Cultural Partnerships between Asia and Europe.

  • On 6-16 May 2015 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, emerging curators, artists and students from Croatia, Slovenia and the Philippines will meet at Curating-in-Depth to discuss contemporary curatorial practices in Asia and Europe.

Through a series of lectures, workshops, field trips and exhibitions, Curating-in-Depth project will investigate initiatives in the field of contemporary curatorial practices. The project will particularly address increasingly common trend of ‘parachuting curators’ that rely on minimum engagement with local context in the curating process. It also aims to strengthen Asia-Europe non-governmental institutional collaborations and to confront evident challenges in the still neglected field of curating and mediating the arts.

Part 2 of Curating-in-Depth will see the same group of curators, artists and critics meet in the Philippines in August 2015, for another 2-week intense exchange. Through this reciprocal mobility between Croatia, Slovenia and the Philippines, the project will increase the knowledge sharing on good practices for curating contemporary visual arts.

On 11 May at the Center for Contemporary Arts in Ljubljana Ms Anupama Sekhar, Director of ASEF’s Culture Department will deliver a presentation about ASEF’s recent activities in the field of contemporary arts and cultural mobility between Asia and Europe.

As part of the programme organised in Slovenia, ASEF will attend the opening of the NSK exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana on 11 May 2015.
