ASEF Photo Exhibition

May 2015 - December 2016 Dominic LIM Public Affairs Culture

Venue:
ASEM Countries

2016 marks the 20th Anniversary of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). On this occasion, the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), as the only institution created under the ASEM Process, presents a collection of photographs to visualise Asian and European perceptions of people on the move. The ASEF photo competition-cum-exhibition, aims to promote one of the key elements of ASEF’s mandate: better understanding between Asia and Europe through people-to-people connections.

The photographs selected for the exhibition were shortlisted from a photo competition, undertaken by ASEF in 2015. Photographers from 50 ASEM partner countries submitted over 1,500 entries capturing on-the-go scenes. The competition theme reflected the motion and pace of life in Asia and Europe, illustrating moments where we are different and yet, so alike. The competition was judged by a panel of experts, chaired by LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore.

Photography is a powerful medium that can communicate ideas across borders and speak universally to a wide multi-cultural and multilingual audience. By inviting professional and budding photographers to portray Asians and Europeans in their daily life, we hope to highlight the diversities as well as similarities between the lives in the two regions.

The photographs are being exhibited in several capitals in Asia and Europe including Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, at the 11th ASEM Summit (ASEM11) in July 2016.

Project Updates

  • Ms LEE Ju Shen, the Asia Jury Prize Winner of the ASEF Photo Competition “On the Go”, now lives in Singapore after many years of travelling, studying and working around the world. The wealth and diversity of her life experiences, together with her Bachelor’s Degree in Geography, Geology and Environmental Science, have given her a nuanced holistic eye for photography. Her photographs seek to combine people, their unique cultures and beautiful native landscapes in one image. The split-second to find, combine and balance these 3 key elements into one timeless photograph, is the challenge that excites her about photography. Sharing her photographs to open the eyes, hearts and minds of others is what fuels her passion for photography.

On being selected as the Asia Jury Prize Winner Ju Shen said: “I am delighted and very proud to have been selected as the Asia Jury Prize winner for ASEF’s On the Go Photo Competition. Photography has always been a visual bridge between the subject and the beholder. With this unique, global photo competition, ASEF has taken photography further and made it a cultural bridge between Asia and Europe as well.”

  • Ms Berta TILMANTAITĖ, the Europe Jury Prize Winner of the ASEF Photo Competition “On the Go is a Lithuanian multimedia journalist, photographer and videographer. Her visual stories from different parts of the world focus on various social issues including human rights, environment and connection between humans and the nature. Berta earned her Master’s Degree in International Multimedia Journalism from University of Bolton/ Beijing Foreign Studies University, and Bachelors of Journalism from University of Vilnius. She also took a course in Photojournalism at the Danish School of Media and Journalism. She is the co-founder of the first Lithuanian multimedia platform for documentary projects. Her photo and video stories were published in various media outlets around the world and have won awards in international contests and festivals.

On being selected as the Europe Jury Prize Winner Berta said:While I was uploading my photograph on the ASEF Photo Competition website, I looked through the works submitted by other participants. There were hundreds of incredible photos and I thought it would be tough to be selected as a winner. When the results were announced, I was really surprised and happy to find out that I actually won. To be completely honest, while I was taking that picture, I felt it is going to bring me something good, I just did not know what it will be.”

  • As 1 March 2016 marks the 20th Anniversary of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), ASEM partners like the Netherlands and the Kingdom of Thailand celebrated the occasion by exhibiting the ASEF Photo Exhibition “On the Go in their homeland.

The Netherlands shared a long history with Asia. Dutch sailors, merchants and adventurers sailed the Eastern waters in the early 17th century. Representatives from the embassies of ASEM partners of Australia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines and Viet Nam, among others attended the official opening.

As Thailand hosted the inaugural ASEM1 in Bangkok on 1-2 March 1996, on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of ASEM, on 1 March 2016 HE Mr Chaisiri ANAMARN, Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, together with HE Mr Tugsbilguun TUMURKHULEG, Ambassador of Mongolia to Thailand, and Asst. • The ASEF photo exhibition On the Go was launched on 4 November in partnership with the City of Luxembourg. After Luxembourg, the photos will be exhibited in several capitals in Asia and Europe including Singapore, Brussels and Ulaanbaatar.

On occasion of the upcoming 20th Anniversary of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) in 2016, ASEF introduced this photo exhibition to visualise the differences and similarities between Asians and Europeans. The opening ceremony of the exhibition was hosted by the City of Luxembourg. The photographs will be on display at Luxembourg’s City Hall Square, Place Guillaume ll, until end of December 2015.

Seeing this very sensitive dialogue that is suggested in these pictures between Europe and Asia, I felt very moved ... and we really discover all we have in common in both parts of the world,” said Ms Colette MART, Luxembourg’s Vice Mayor in charge of Education and Equal Opportunities, during the exhibition opening.

The photographs selected for the exhibition were shortlisted from a photo competition organised by ASEF in 2015. • On the Go introduces another jury member

    Published on 12 Aug 2015

ASEF is pleased to introduce the second member of the jury panel of the On the Go photo contest. Named by Nikon as one of Asia's top photographers, Mr Stefen CHOW has garnered awards from the World Press Photo, National Geographic, Photographie de la Paris and has been featured by BBC, PDN, Foreign Policy and Le Lettre de la Photographie. Here is an interview with Stefen CHOW.

    Q. What is creativity for you?

Creativity is providing a new perspective to what we think we know.

    Q. Where do you draw your inspiration from?

Life. I do it by reading, talking and observing.

    Q. What is the last project you have been working on?

The Play Project, which is an aerial survey of 100 playgrounds across Singapore. The playground is an integral point as Singapore went from village to a first world city nation in the last 50 years.

    Q. On the Go’s theme is the motion and pace of life in Asia and Europe, illustrating those moments how we can be different and similar at the same time. How would you associate with this theme?

We live in a time where we are more the same then different. Aviation travel, the internet, streamlining of languages have brought Asia and Europe closer together.

    Q. What are your expectations as the judge of this competition?

I love seeing new works, and being able to provide an opinion on works is certainly an honour.

    Q. How will you judge a photo?

    Emotion, emotion, emotion.

    -------------------------------------------------------

Submit your work at www.asef.org/onthego to participate in this online contest!

The deadline has been extended and the competition period now ends on 13 September 2016.

  • ASEF On the Go: Meet a jury member

    Published on 03 Aug 2015

We are pleased to announce that Ms Gwen LEE, Director of the Singapore International Photography Festival (SIPF), will be one of the jury members of ASEF’s online photo contest On the Go. All budding and professional photographers can submit their work at www.asef.org/onthego to participate in this online contest.

    Q. What is creativity for you?

Creativity is lending new insight and sparking conversation between people, and in this case photograph and the viewer.

    Q. Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I draw my inspiration from nature and my daily conversation with people around me.

    Q. What is the last project you have been working on?

I am curating a photography exhibition at the Dali International Photography Exhibition. It is titled "Gold & Green: The Making of Singapore Photography" and narrates the recent photographic works in Singapore. The show will be launched on 5 August 2015 in Dali, Yunnan, China, and subsequently will tour to other cities.

    Q. On the Go’s theme is the motion and pace of life in Asia and Europe, illustrating those moments how we can be different and similar at the same time. How would you associate with this theme?

I personally think there are more similarities than differences - common values in relationships, family, dreams we have for the future, etc. The theme On the Go is broad to encompass all aspects of life, and could mean moments of action, or the purpose that compels individual or community to take action, and suggest the beat and rhythm in their ways of living.

    Q. What are your expectations as the judge of this competition?

I love photography as a medium and I am hoping to see works beyond of what I could imagine.

    Q. How will you judge a photo?

First I think the work should address the theme creatively. As there will also be a photography exhibition, I would consider the quality of the submitted images in terms of the approach towards subject matter, the ideas behind the work, the creation of the photographic images in terms of composition, and light etc.
