Asia-Europe Museum Network (ASEMUS)


ASEMUS (Asia-Europe Museum Network) is a cross-cultural network of museums with Asian Collections which promotes mutual understanding through collaborative activities and works towards facilitating the sharing and use of museum collections.

ASEMUS now has over 100 members and the membership is continually growing. As of November 2014, the network included 116 members, from 39 countries (64 from Asia, 41 from Europe) and 11 affiliate members.

Since 2011, ASEF continues to support the ASEMUS network’s visibility through a dedicated website, which is featured as a sub-site of the ASEF culture360 online platform at

The ASEMUS Executive Committee meets annually and is presided by a Chair and a Vice-Chair. The ASEMUS Executive Committee comprises of representatives from Asia and Europe. A representative from ASEF and the Executive Committee Secretary also sit in the Executive Committee. The Chair, Vice-Chair and Secretariat positions are alternated between Asian and European members and are elected into office for the duration of 3 years.

Its current Executive Committee is led by Ms Fionnuala CROKE, ASEMUS Chair and Director of the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin and Mr Alan CHONG, ASEMUS Vice-Chair and Director of the Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore. The ASEMUS Secretariat is located at the Asian Civilisations Museum, under the National Heritage Board of Singapore.

ASEF is an active member of the ASEMUS Executive Committee and continues to work in consultation with the ASEMUS Secretariat, the ASEMUS Chair and the Vice Chair in order to increase the relevance, impact and visibility of ASEMUS.


Recent projects

ASEF supports other key activities of the Network including the organisation of the bi-annual ASEMUS General Conferences and the annual Executive Committee Meetings.

In 2014, the 6th ASEMUS General Conference and ASEMUS Executive Committee Meeting was hosted by the Weltmuseum Wien in Vienna, Austria. In 2015, ASEMUS Executive Committee Meeting will take place in Singapore to coincide with the celebration of Singapore’s 50th Anniversary since its independence.

In 2015, the Educational Exchange and Outreach Programme, which aims to build capacity for museum professionals through shared experiences, knowledge and skills, will support 2 projects between China and Latvia and between the Philippines and the United Kingdom.

Past collaborations in ASEMUS include: the Virtual Collections of Masterpieces (VCM) and the Self and Other travelling exhibition.
