Asia-Europe Cultural Partnership Initiatives: Film

The Asia-Europe Foundation has nearly a decade of exprience in facilitating Asia-Europe cooperation in the areas of film, documentary and new media. Programmes in this area allows peers from diverse backgrounds in Asia and Europe to explore creativity, art and artistic practice in different contexts, be it by using the internet as a tool for cooperation or by participating in artistic workshops, seminars and conferences. These activities have resulted in tangible outcomes such as establishment of networks and networking platforms, development of film projects, and broader career opportunities for young film professionals.

The Asia-Europe Cultural Partnership Initiative: Film (AECPI: Film) is a scheme introduced in 2009 to respond to the increasing growth and needs of the independent film sector. It allows more flexible, sustainable and efficient partnerships, with events developed alongside key initiatives in the field of film in Asia and Europe.

AECPI: Film funds Asia-Europe collaborations between individuals and organisationss, as well as support capacity-building for film producers, directors, critics and scriptwriters. Designed as an active go-between among independent film industries inboth regios, the Programme provides opportunity for partnership by inviting film institutions, associations, organisations or festivals to propose quality and relevant bi-regional programme and to work with ASEF on its content and visible communication around the projects.

Assisted by an expert jury composed of Ms. Lorna Tee (Hong Kong), Ms. Jung Soowan (Korea), Mr. Jérémy Segay (France) and Mr. Maciej Nowicki (Poland), ASEF has accepted 3 projects in the area of FILM to be implemented for the year 2010.

Currently ASEF does not accept applications for this programme for the year 2010.

AECPI: FILM PROJECTS 2010

1. "Raiding the Archives"
Partner organisations: Project 304/6th Bangkok Experimental Film Festival (Thailand) and University of Westminster (United Kingdom)

A team of international curators will research audio-visual archives in Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, China, Thailand, Hong Kong, the Netherlands and United Kingdom for the purpose of raising awareness about the importance of archives in Asia and Europe and to create a multidisciplinary network and research related to moving images in Southeast Asia. This Asian-European team of curators will collaborate on 6-8 selection of moving image programmes that capture histories at the margins, making a case for looking anew at history via discovering contingent details in the images’ frame. The results of this research will be published in the catalogue of the Bangkok Experimental Film Festiva in 2011.

2. "Human Frames"

The opening event will be followed by a second major event held at Substation from 26 August – 5 September during the 6th Singapore Short Film Festival. Following this second event, the film tour of the program starts through a series of screenings across Asia and Europe (Indonesia, France, United Kingdom, Germany).
