LINGUA COMICA 3: Asia-Europe dialogue through comics

Phase 1: Online Collaboratory (September-October 2008)
Phase 2: Kyoto, Japan (8-16 November 2008)
Phase 3: Exhibition in Japan and follow-up activities in Asia and Europe (2008-09)

LINGUA COMICA 3: Asia-Europe  Dialogue Through Comics gathered 14 emerging comics artists from ASEM countries. They were paired in Asian-European teams for a 2-month internet-based and 8 days of intensive work in Kyoto, Japan. Comics was the medium of interaction and collaboration between the participants. Through the artist residency programme’s public events, workshops, lecturers and receptions, participants became acquainted with the local comics’ scene in Japan.
The work-in-progress produced via the online platform and in Japan was facilitated by internationally renowned comics artists and lecturers Tanitoc (France), Kosei Ono (Japan), Titus Ackermann (Germany), Kim-Dae Joong (Korea) and Jiro Taniguchi (Japan) who were supported by a number of high-calibre resource persons and guest facilitators.
The final phase of the LINGUA COMICA 3 project was marked by a two-month long showcase of works produced by the participants from ASEM countries (15 November 2008-12 January 2009) at the Kyoto International Manga Museum. Over 15,000 people visited the LINGUA COMICA 3 exhibition in Japan during that period.

For 2009, two main activities follow-up on the programme in Kyoto.

Works from LINGUA COMICA 3 and previous ASEF comics projects held in Asia and Europe are to be exhibited at the sidelines of international comic festivals. The first of these festivals to host the exhibition was the NextComic International Festival in Linz, Austria (6-8 March 2009) which attracted over 6,000 visitors. The Bucheon International Comics Festival, BICOF (September 2009) also presented an exhibition on the LINGUA COMICA programme from 2006-2009.

In April 2009 ASEF also launched the LINGUA COMICA RELOADED programme that it is funding five collaborative outstanding comics projects initiated by several LINGUA COMICA alumni (2006-09).

1.Numbers by Budi Wijaya (Indonesia), Titus Ackermann (Germany), Matei Branea (Romania) and Tsuyoshi Ogawa (Japan);

2.Play! By Amelie Clement (France) and Rommel Joson (Philippines);

3.Promised Land by Kim Dae Joong (Korea) and Sophie Darcq (France);

4.The Salmon of Knowledge by Tanitoc (France) and Dae-Joong Kim (Korea);

5.Wires* by Nele Bronner (Germany), Powil Guzmanos (Philippines), Faezal Muniran (Malaysia) and PieR Gajewski (France);

Through these collaborations new networks of creators, artists, writers, publishers, editors and commentators were fostered and comic artists  embarked on future opportunities for multilateral Asia-Europe collaborations. Innovative tools of communication and fresh and diverse approaches to co-operation were introduced for the artists’ works.

The 3rd instalment of LINGUA COMICA in 2008 was co-organised by ASEF and the Kyoto International Manga Museum (MM), an institution formed in 2006 under a joint initiative by Kyoto City and Kyoto Seika University.
