Informal ASEM Seminar On Human Rights
Overview
Established in 1998, the Informal ASEM Seminar On Human Rights brings together government officials, academics, and civil society representatives from ASEM member countries for dialogues on ASEM priorities.
The ASEF organises the seminar together with the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute (delegated by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Supervision of the seminar is entrusted to a Steering Committee, which consists of the Seminar's organisers as well as representatives of the ministries of Foreign Affairs of China and Indonesia and the European Commission.
Programme Features
The seminars involve:
- The participation of two representatives from universities and NGOs, and one official representative from each of the Asian ASEM countries.
- The participation of one representative from the civil society and one official representative from each of the European ASEM countries.
- The participation of the European Commission and the ASEAN Secretariat.
- Discussions on a theme, held in working groups.
- Closed-door debates to allow the free and direct exchange of views.
- Preparing a set of recommendations to be sent to relevant institutions in ASEM countries as informal contributions to the official Asia-Europe dialogue.
