ASEF Diversity Creates Award 1997– 2017

The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) was officially launched at the 1st Asia-Europe Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (ASEM FMM1) on 15 February 1997 in Singapore.

ASEF marked its 21st anniversary with the inaugural ASEF Day on Thursday, 1 February 2018. On this day, ASEF launched the Nomination Call for ASEF Diversity Creates Award 1997–2017.

The Award honours individuals and institutions with an outstanding contribution to ASEF’s mission of promoting greater mutual understanding, civil society cooperation, and improving connectivity between the people of Asia and Europe.


Nominees should not be or have previously been employed by ASEF or governments of ASEM partners.

Selection Criteria

Candidates for the ASEF Diversity Creates Award 1997-2017 would have been engaged in past ASEF projects as participants or partners. Through their input during ASEF events, by conducting spin-off activities, or in their independent work, they have made an extraordinary contribution to promoting ASEF’s core values:





Nomination & Selection Procedure

From Thursday, 1 February 2018, nominations will be accepted via an online form. Applicants can nominate themselves or propose a person/institution of their choice. Each applicant can submit a maximum of 4 nominations, providing reasons and evidences of inputs or works deserving of the Award.

There will be a total of 4 Awards, with 2 recipients each from Asia and Europe. A selection panel will decide on the 4 Award recipients.

The results of the ASEF Diversity Creates Award 1997-2017 will be officially announced on Monday, 30 April 2018 on ASEF’s online communications platforms. The 4 recipients will also be notified in person.

The Awards Presentation ceremony will take place during the 38th ASEF Board of Governors’ (BoG) Meeting in June 2018.

Content of the Award

Invitation to Attend the Awards Presentation Ceremony

Each of the 4 Award recipients will be provided with a round-trip air ticket, hotel accommodation and daily allowances to personally receive the Award at a ceremony held in conjunction with the 38th ASEF BoG Meeting. Recipients will also have the opportunity to present at the BoG Meeting their work which merited the Award. They will further have the opportunity to meet and exchange views and ideas with members of the BoG and the ASEF team.

Opportunity to Pursue ASEF-related Area of Interest

Each of the 4 Award recipients will be invited by ASEF to further collaborate with ASEF. Each recipient may tap on ASEF resources and work with ASEF to carry out an implementable project which is based on the recipient’s proposal in one of ASEF’s 6 thematic areas. These 6 themes are culture, education, governance, sustainable development, public health and economy. The relevant Programme Department of ASEF will follow up with the recipient on the details of the collaboration and bring the collaboration to fruition.
